Five Fun Facts with Sekou Laidlow

Sekou Laidlow lives in Atlanta, Georgia but he grew up in Baltimore. He stumbled into acting after auditioning for his first role at the encouragement of a friend, and scoring the lead role. He honed his chops at the Lynchburg Theater in Virginia and with the Arena Players in Baltimore, whom he credits for turning his gift into a craft. Some Baltimore Center Stage patrons may remember him playing several roles in the 2013/14 production of A Civil War Christmas by Paula Vogel. He returns to Baltimore Center Stage as Reggie in our upcoming production of Skeleton Crew. We sat down with him to learn more about him offstage.

Education: Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County; Liberty University and Julliard School of Drama.

Sport: Played high school basketball at Woodlawn and remains a hoops fan. Since he’s in Baltimore for Skeleton Crew, he has been able to catch his nephew (a nationally ranked guard for Mount Saint Joseph’s High School) in a few games.

Food: Favorite place to eat growing up in Baltimore was Red Lobster; since his return for Skeleton Crew he’s been seeking out vegan options, including Red Emma’s.

First TV Role: Homicide: Life on the Streets

Biggest thing that has changed since he’s returned to Baltimore:  “I couldn’t believe that Shake and Bake [Family Fun Center on Pennsylvania Avenue] closed,” he tells us. “I loved Shake and Bake growing up and I really wanted to go back there!”
